New Year, Fresh Start: Questions to Ask Yourself When Decluttering
Whew, we made it to 2022! The changing of the year always inspires me to reflect upon the previous year and to think about ways that I can make positive changes in the new one. One of my favorite ways to kick off the new year is to host and participate in a 31 Day Declutter Challenge for the Balanced Home Organization Community.
The Challenge gives you an opportunity to remove 496 items from your home throughout the month of January to give you a fresh start. Getting rid of the clutter will help you feel lighter and more focused. Having less visual distractions will propel you toward meeting your goals.
Here's how it works: declutter 1 item on January 1st, 2 items on January 2nd, 3 items on January 3rd, all the way up to 31 items on January 31st. Now, 496 items might seem like a lot of stuff to declutter, but think about the past few years. We have been home more than we have ever been which can lead to more purchases and, therefore, to the accumulation of more items in our homes.
If you feel that you are ready to embark on a decluttering journey yourself, I have put together a list of questions to help you get unstuck and move forward toward living the life you want. These are the same questions that I ask my clients during home organization sessions.
Do I love this item?
If so, it can stay.
If not, let it go!
Do I need this item?
If so, it can stay
Are you sure or are you keeping it just in case?
If not, let it go!
Do I use this item?
If so, it can stay.
If not, let it go!
You don't have to be part of the 31 Day Declutter Challenge to start decluttering your home. Any day of the year or any time of the day is great to start simplifying your life.
