Spring Cleaning Made Simple: Decluttering Hacks for a Fresh Start

Spring is here, and with it comes the urge to refresh, reset, and reclaim your home from the clutter that’s built up over the past year. If you’re a busy mom, a family juggling daily chaos, or simply someone feeling overwhelmed by the mess, spring cleaning can feel like a daunting task. But don’t worry—I’ve got your back! With the right approach, you can tackle your biggest problem areas, create a home that feels lighter, and set yourself up for an organized year ahead.

To Do list for spring cleaning and decluttering

Start with a Plan

Jumping into spring cleaning without a strategy can quickly lead to frustration. Instead, let’s start by making a simple plan. List the key areas in your home that need attention, such as the kitchen, closets, garage, living room, and bathrooms. Breaking these spaces down into smaller tasks will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed. Set a realistic timeline to work through one space at a time without burnout, and gather your supplies—trash bags, donation bins, cleaning solutions, and storage containers—to stay organized from the beginning. I’ve created an Amazon list of some of my favorite spring cleaning essentials to help you get started!

Declutter Before You Deep Clean

Before you grab the mop and duster, decluttering is the most essential step in the cleaning and organizing process. After all, it’s easier to clean and organize when there’s less clutter in the way! Cleaning around things you don’t need is a waste of effort. As you work through each area, sort items into three piles—Keep, Donate, and Trash. When it comes to things you haven’t used in over a year, consider whether or not you really need to keep it. Try to avoid getting stuck in nostalgia; if it doesn’t serve a purpose and is just taking up space, it’s time to let it go. Tackle one drawer, shelf, or cabinet at a time to prevent becoming overwhelmed.

Deep Clean Like a Pro

Once the clutter is gone, it’s time for a deep cleaning! This is the perfect time to clean items and areas that don’t get everyday attention.

What is the best way to deep clean? Start from the top down—dust ceiling fans and light fixtures before vacuuming and mopping floors. Wash curtains, upholstery, and bedding to remove dust and allergens. Disinfect frequently touched areas like doorknobs, light switches, and cabinet handles. Opt for natural cleaning solutions, like this all purpose cleaner, for a chemical-free, fresh home.

Some areas of your home tend to collect grime faster than others and deserve extra attention.

  • In the kitchen, wipe down cabinets, sanitize countertops, and deep clean appliances. (Not sure where to start? Drop in this garbage disposal tablet to cut down on grime and more, and try this dishwasher tablet to help with limescale and odor-causing residue.)

  • Closets can be cleaned after organizing your garments by vacuuming floors, wiping down shelves, and replacing musty storage solutions with fresh alternatives – you can also utilize moisture absorbers to help cut down on odors like this hanging solution or tub option.

  • Bathrooms deserve a thorough scrub—disinfect sinks, tubs, and toilets (this is my favorite cleaner), and replace old towels or mildewed shower liners for a fresh feel.

  • If you have carpets or high-traffic rug areas, give a good steam-cleaning to your carpets. In your living room, remember to give a good wipe down of your furniture, and wash throw pillows and blankets to remove hidden dust and allergens.

Get the Whole Family Involved

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a solo mission. If you have children, turn it into a team effort by assigning age-appropriate tasks to kids, keeping them engaged and teaching them responsibility. Set a timer and turn cleaning into a game—who can declutter the most in 15 minutes? Play music or an audiobook to make the process more enjoyable! Once the job is done, reward yourselves with a movie night, a special treat, or a family outing to celebrate your hard work.

Maintain Your Progress

After all that effort, maintaining a clean and clutter-free home is key. While it’s easy to slip back into some not-so-great habits, try following a “one-in, one-out" rule—for every new item you bring in, remove an old one. And you don’t need to take hours during your week to try and clean or organize your space: spend just 10 minutes a day tidying up high-traffic areas to prevent clutter from piling up again. You can also schedule monthly decluttering check-ins to reassess your space and stay on top of organization. Consider setting up a family organization station with labeled bins for mail, keys, and essentials to reduce daily chaos.
