What Is Body Doubling and How Can It Help Me Get Organized?

Two women working with each other to complete tasks

If you've ever gone into a task with every intention of finally taking care of it, only to feel instantly overwhelmed, you are not alone: decluttering the guest room that’s turned into the dumping ground for everything, organizing the dozens of piles of papers across your space, even the dreaded “doom box” that somehow grows by the month…

So many of us struggle with knowing where to start, regardless of how big or how small it might be. When a task feels too overwhelming or unclear, our brains often choose avoidance over action. That's just how a lot of brains work!

The good news is that there's a strategy that can help, and it has a name: body doubling.

What is body doubling?

Body doubling is a productivity technique where another person works alongside you, either in person or virtually, while you focus on a task you've been putting off. The body double doesn't need to do the same task as you. They simply provide a calm, supportive presence that helps your brain stay engaged and on track.

Think about it this way: have you ever noticed that it's sometimes easier to sit down and do paperwork at a coffee shop than alone at home? Or that you can finally make those phone calls when a friend is sitting nearby doing their own thing? Or that it’s easier to clean the house if you have your partner by your side? That's body doubling in action.

This approach has been used informally for years, but it's gained a lot of attention in the ADHD and neurodiversity communities. The research shows it can significantly improve focus, reduce procrastination, and help people complete tasks they've been avoiding for weeks or sometimes months.

Why does body doubling work?

When we work alone, it's easy for our brains to wander, second-guess, or simply shut down when facing a big, vague task. A body double creates a gentle layer of external accountability by just being present. For many people, especially those with ADHD, executive functioning challenges, or anxiety around clutter and disorganization, that subtle shift makes all the difference.

Here's what body doubling can help you do:

✓ Start tasks you've been avoiding, even the ones that have been on your list for months

✓ Stay focused for longer stretches without getting pulled away by distractions

✓ Break overwhelming goals into small, manageable steps

✓ Feel less alone in the process, because you really aren't

✓ Build momentum and finish what you started.

Who can benefit from body doubling?

Body doubling is helpful for everyone, but it tends to be especially powerful for people who:

  • Have ADHD or ADD

  • Struggle with executive functioning (planning, starting, or finishing tasks)

  • Experience anxiety or overwhelm around clutter and disorganization

  • Are neurodivergent and find solo productivity challenging

  • Simply work better when they feel a sense of accountability

If you've ever thought "I work so much better when someone else is around," body doubling is probably something you've been intuitively craving without knowing it even had a name.

How I Use Body Doubling with My Clients

Home organization projects are one of the most common places where body doubling makes a real impact. Decluttering and organizing can lead to decision fatigue and can often feel emotionally heavy. You're making decisions about your belongings, your space, and sometimes parts of your life that feel stuck.

With a body double by your side, the process becomes lighter. You have someone to help you:

  • Identify where to start instead of staring at the room in overwhelm

  • Break the project into short, focused sessions

  • Make decisions without judgment

  • Celebrate progress, not just the finished product

As an occupational therapist and professional home organizer, I meet with clients either in their homes or virtually via Zoom to create a judgment-free space where they can get things done. I'm not there to tell you what to keep or what to toss, but I am there to help you think through it, stay on track, and feel supported through a process that can genuinely feel hard. In fact, I have several clients who tell me “I won’t get this done unless you’re here with me!” because they know just how impactful this work can really be.

My background as an occupational therapist is what makes this approach different from the average person. I understand how the brain works, how executive functioning challenges show up in daily life, and how to meet you exactly where you are without judgment or an agenda that doesn't fit your life.

Together, we take those long-term goals, like organizing the garage, the guest room, or closet and break them into short-term, actionable steps that feel manageable and real.

Does Virtual Body Doubling Actually Work?

One of the things I love most about this approach is that I don't need to be physically in your space for it to be effective. Virtual body doubling over Zoom works just as well for many clients, and it means that no matter where you are, you can access this kind of focused, supported accountability. Whether we're working together in your home in Portland or connecting over video, the goal is the same: creating a calm, focused environment where you can make progress on the things that matter most to you.

Ready to try it?

If you've been struggling to get organized and feel like you just can't seem to get started, or stay on track, body doubling might be exactly what you've been missing. You don't have to do this alone. It’s like having me in your back pocket to make sure things can be crossed off of your to-do list in a timely manner and celebrate the victory with you!

I'd love to connect with you and see if working together is a good fit. Schedule your complimentary Zoom consultation and let's talk about what's feeling stuck and how we can move forward together.
